The Church of São Francisco was built by Archbishop D. Rodrigo de Moura Teles in the first half of the 18th century.
See more +Praça do Campo Novo, inaugurated in 1725, is attributed to the architect Manuel Pinto de Vilalobos, who was responsible for various civil works for the Archbishop of Braga in the early 18th century.
Square-shaped in a rhombus, it opens onto four main streets: São Gonçalo, Santo André, das Oliveiras and Guadalupe. Around it, the residential buildings have two floors - the first floor has doors and windows, or two doors, while the second floor consists of windows with balconies.
This type of civil architecture is linked to the work of Vilalobos, who created an urban model marked by the simplicity of the main façades, with two floors and noble floor windows highlighted by triangular pediments, a common feature in northern Portugal.
In the center of the square is a garden with a monument dedicated to King Pedro V, first erected in 1879 in Campo de Santana and then moved to Campo Novo around 1915. On the north side of the square is a granite fountain surrounded by steps, and behind it is the palace of the Count of Carcavelos, built in the 19th century, which significantly changed the visual rhythm of the square.
