The construction of St. Mark's Hospital, the main home for pilgrims and those with serious illnesses, dates back to 1508.
See more +In the 18th century, Braga went through an intense period of building and remodeling churches, with the Church of the Third Order of St. Francis standing out in the city's historic center. The land was acquired at the end of the 17th century and work began in 1694, although the author of the original project is unknown and it had Mannerist features.
In 1707, the Mannerist façade was replaced by a new one, probably designed by the master Manuel Fernandes da Silva, bringing a more Baroque style, with restrained decorative elements, similar to those of the churches of São Víctor and São Vicente. Construction of the façade and tower lasted until the 1720s.
The interior consists of a single nave with a coffered ceiling and a chancel decorated with blue and white 18th-century tiles depicting scenes from the lives of Franciscan saints. The neoclassical altarpiece was added in 1781, completing the decoration of the church.
