Tolls and payments

If you're driving in Portugal, you'll find two types of highway:

1) Manual tolls

These are the most traditional: there are booths where you can stop and pay the toll, either in cash or by bank card. Always choose the lanes marked "payment". Before you reach the manual tolls, you'll find the following sign:

At manual tolls, if you don't have a "Via Verde" device, you should always follow the lane with the barrier indicated at the exit, usually by the signs below:

2) Electronic tolls (ex-SCUT)

There are no booths here, just gantries that automatically register the vehicle's license plate. You can consult the map of highways with this type of toll here. In these cases, payment must be made electronically or in advance. There are several options for foreign vehicles:

  • EasyToll - links your car's license plate to your bank card. You can sign up online before your trip or as soon as you enter Portugal via the website Portugal TollsThe EasyToll point is located at one of the EasyToll points near the border (usually in the first service area). You can check the location of the EasyToll points at the border at map.

  • TollCard - prepaid card you can buy onlineIt can be used at service stations or post office counters (CTT). It works like a balance: just activate it with an SMS and it will be linked to your license plate. You can use more than one card on the same license plate. To check the balance still available, check the following linkby entering your registration number and activation key.

  • Via Verde - If you already use this system in Portugal, Spain (Via T) or France (Télépéage), you can drive without any worries. Manual tolls simply use the "Via Verde" lanes and electronic tolls are debited automatically.

Before you reach an electronic tollbooth (ex-SCUT) you will see the following sign:

3) Important tips

  • Do not use the "Via Verde" lanes if you do not have this device. If you end up driving through one of these lanes, you can pay without a fine at a Via Verde office or at the post office (CTT) within 15 days. The "Via Verde" lanes are marked with this as shown in the image below:

  • Always keep proof of EasyToll membership or TollCard top-up.

  • With any of these options, the journey to Braga and the rest of the country becomes practical and comfortable.

Plugs and sockets in Portugal

When planning your trip to Portugal, it's important to make sure you can keep your devices charged to record every moment of the experience.

There are two main types of electrical plugs used in Portugal:

  • Type C - the classic one with two parallel round ends, very common in Europe.

  • Type F - known as "Schuko", also with two round tips, but with an earth connection. Both types are compatible with each other.

Electricity in Portugal works with 230 V e 50 HzThis is compatible with most European countries.

If your devices have different plugs, you can solve this easily:

  • With a travel adapterIn the case of modern devices that already support different voltages (such as cell phones, laptops or cameras).

  • With a voltage converteronly if your appliances are not compatible with 230 V.
