The Church of Pópulo is richly ornamented and began to be built in 1596 by Archbishop Frei Agostinho de Jesus, so that he could be buried there. The Pópulo Convent, classified as a Property of Public Interest, has a noble staircase with tile panels from the 18th century in monochrome blue, giving the space a three-dimensional effect.
A large part of this building, including the façade, was rebuilt at the end of the 18th century, a project with the signature of the renowned architect Carlos Amarante, giving the temple a neoclassicism that ennobles it.
Today, the convent's premises are one of the buildings of Braga Town Hall. Guided tours are available by appointment.
