The store
A century-old store dedicated to the sale of haberdashery, where everything happens around a long counter marked by time, a space of multiple exchanges, where the "metro" is the protagonist. When you open the door of this small shop, you come across an extraordinary world of buttons, lace, thread, embroidery and old machines for lining buttons, pinning eyelets or pleating skirts. But also a world of delicately embroidered bibs, carapins, bonnets or sheets for baby's trousseau. And everything is perfectly placed in the tired wooden furniture that holds them and in the showcases that display them.
History
Casa Pereira das Violas was founded in 1918 by Manuel Pereira, a former clerk at "Casa do José da Viola". The name "violas" comes from "violo", the name given to the crumb of bread, which was given to the poorest by their boss. The word "viola" evolved over time and Manuel Pereira became known as "Pereira das Violas". When the former cashier settled down, he took with him the name by which he was always called: Pereira das Violas. The name of the store already misled the people of Braga into thinking that musical instruments could be found there.
Inaugurated on January 3, 1918, it was featured in the newspapers of the time. The establishment was born at a time when the sale of lace and embroidery, ribbons and buttons and other accessories for the dresses handmade by the numerous group of seamstresses and fashion designers from Braga was at its peak, to be debuted by the city's most elegant ladies in the Passeio Público.
In 1969, Manuel Pereira's sons, Carlos and Manuel Sarmento Pereira, took over the business and maintained the tradition of good service, where all customers received personalized advice. One hundred years after it was founded, Casa Pereira das Violas is still in its second generation. Carlos Sarmento Pereira, son of the founder, is the current owner with his daughters.
For those passing by on Avenida Central, Casa Pereira das Violas doesn't go unnoticed. The color and lettering used on the simple advertising sign and the friendly presence of Carlos Sarmento Pereira catch the most distracted eye.
