Running through the entire northern region of Portugal, it is considered a Great Route and connects the four tourist sub-destinations of northern Portugal (Minho, Trás-os-Montes, Douro and Porto). It crosses 35 municipalities, a territory with 3.6 million inhabitants, crossing the more urban coastal landscapes with the "paintings" of the more rural interior.
