The Caminho Minhoto Ribeiro is one of the oldest routes linking the cities of Braga and Santiago de Compostela.
See more +Braga, one of the oldest Christian cities in the world, is a must for those who travel along the ancient roads to Santiago de Compostela.
Following in the footsteps of Leon de Rosmithal, Baron of Blatna, pilgrims will feel the weight of the centuries, among Roman milieus, remote villages and the Serra do Carvalho, the scene of historic battles, which invite them to stop for a while and contemplate.
For this important journey, which began in 1465 in the city of Prague, he was accompanied by an entourage of 40 people he trusted and 52 horses. Welcomed by the main European courts, he also found a royal welcome in Braga, with King Afonso V of Portugal waiting for him, who granted him lodging for eight days and, as a token of gratitude for the letter Leon de Rosmithal had brought from D. Leonor of Portugal (married to Emperor Frederick III and the king's sister), two beautiful horses.
Approximately 240 km long, the route crosses part of the ancient Via Romana XVII - the oldest in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. From breathtaking landscapes to places full of history, Roman bridges and sidewalks, churches and chapels dot the route, silent witnesses to centuries of pilgrimages.
At the end, pilgrims are led into the heart of the city of Braga, crossing the emblematic Rua do Souto to the majestic Cathedral - where D. Afonso, the pilgrim infant, who died on his way to Santiago in the 15th century, rests.
On this unique route, each step is a journey through time, between the natural and cultural heritage of Minho and Trás-os-Montes and the spirituality of the paths of faith.
