The Geira and Arrieiros Way is the one that most reflects the historical and cultural traits of the northern region of Portugal. Being one of the most fascinating pilgrimage routes in Portugal and one of the few that connects directly to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, its name - Geira, which means "road" in Latin - dates back to an ancient Roman military road used to move the legions between the cities of Bracara Augusta (now Braga) and Asturica Augusta (now Astorga).

The term Arrieiros, on the other hand, refers to the ancient carriers who used this Roman route to transport goods between northern Portugal and Galicia.
Beginning at Braga Cathedral, the oldest cathedral in Portugal, built before the founding of the country, the Geira and Arrieiros Way passes through picturesque villages, ancient Roman bridges and countless archaeological remains.
The journey through the Geira Romana and the breathtaking landscapes of Gerês, with its cascades of clear water, is an immersion in deep, wild and unspoiled Portugal, where you can enjoy peaceful and unspoiled nature.
The natural landscapes, the silence, the rusticity of the route and the authenticity of its people make this route a real inspiration for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela.
