The exhibition "Braga do Outro Lado do Mar" is part of the memorandum of understanding signed in July 2021 between the cities of Braga and Ouro Preto (Minas Gerais, Brazil). This agreement, signed with the aim of establishing partnerships within the framework of the cultural program outlined for Braga's candidacy for European Capital of Culture 2027, provided for European Capital of Culture 2027, provided, among other initiatives, for the joint organization of two temporary exhibitions: one with the title in question, and the other with the title "The Sacration of the Masters - Braga and Congonhas: Montes da Fé, Santuários da Arte".
These two exhibition proposals are now presented in 2025, the year in which Braga assumes the title of Portuguese Capital of Culture, under a new configuration, updated and brought together under the aggregating title "Braga on the Other Side of the Sea". This reformulation affirms a clear commitment to internationalization and to the historic Atlantic ties that are deeply rooted between two countries united by language, culture and a particularly remarkable shared past.
The links between Braga/Minho and Ouro Preto/Minas Gerais are undeniable. The mutual influences are well expressed in the built historical and artistic heritage, such as the Bom Jesus Sanctuary in Braga and the Bom Jesus de Matosinhos Sanctuary in Congonhas do Campo (Minas Gerais). Also worthy of two major figures of the Portuguese-Brazilian Baroque and Rococo: André Soares and António Francisco Lisboa, the famous "Aleijadinho", exponents of an artistic language that crossed the Atlantic.
Today, in addition to paying tribute to those who brought our architecture and art to the state of Minas Gerais and to those who "across the sea" interpreted and recreated it, we set out, side-by-side, to value artistic creation and "know-how". In this context, the exhibition aims to diverse audiences, in a district capital that is characterized by the significant number of Brazilian citizens who have come to it in search of knowledge and culture, whether as inhabitants, tourists or as students at its University.
