Presentation of the collection "Art History in Braga" at the Biscainhos Museum celebrates the city's cultural identity
On October 23, at 5 p.m., the Salão Nobre of the Biscainhos Museum will host the public presentation of the collection História da Arte em Braga, a reference work that constitutes a publishing milestone in the Portuguese cultural panorama.
The session will feature speeches by the Mayor of Braga, Dr. Ricardo Rio, the editorial coordinator, Eduardo Pires de Oliveira, and Henrique Barreto Nunes, librarian and founder of ASPA.
Promoted by the Municipality of Braga, this collection is the first art history entirely dedicated to a Portuguese city, conceived and developed by a multidisciplinary team of specialized academics. The project, of great ambition and scientific rigour, covers more than two millennia of artistic and cultural evolution, from Romanization to the 20th century, reflecting the richness and diversity of Braga's heritage.
Under the editorial coordination of Eduardo Pires de Oliveira, an art historian of recognized merit, the collection's main objectives are to promote knowledge and appreciation of artistic heritage, strengthen Braga's cultural and tourist dimension and disseminate the city's cultural heritage in an accessible and scientifically based way.
The collection consists of five volumes, each entrusted to leading researchers in their respective historical periods:
Volume I - Bracara Augusta. A City of Images, by Rui Morais and Jorge Ribeiro;
Volume II - History of Medieval Arts in the Municipality of Braga, by Luís Fontes;
Volume III - Art in Braga (c.1486-c.1640), by Paula Bessa;
Volume IV - Braga: Baroque, Rococo and Tardobaroque - Classicizing Tendencies, by Eduardo Pires de Oliveira;
Volume V - XIX/XX Centuries - Braga in Times of Demand and Change, by Eduardo Pires de Oliveira and Eduardo Fernandes.
Presented in the context of the Portuguese Capital of Culture, the History of Art in Braga collection makes a unique contribution to understanding the city's cultural identity and is an indispensable reference for researchers, students, cultural tourism professionals and anyone interested in the country's artistic heritage.
After the presentation, the History of Art in Braga collection will be available for purchase at the Municipality of Braga's points of sale - the Tourist Office, the One Stop Shop and municipal stands at cultural events - as well as in bookshops and other cultural venues that request it on consignment from the Municipality.
