Founded by António Vasconcellos at the beginning of the 20th century, Barbearia Vasconcelos is one of the oldest barbershops in Braga and is also known as "A Centenária".
It passed into the hands of António Xavier da Silva in 1970, who has kept its original features.
History
The exact year of its foundation is not known, but it is estimated that it dates back to the end of the first decade of the last century. The founder of the establishment in Rua de S. Marcos was António de Carvalho Vasconcelos. There are references to the barbershop in 1915, and it is known that in 1948, his widow, Maria da Apresentação Vasconcelos, took over. In 1960, the barbershop was taken over by a new owner, Emídio José Ribeiro, who in turn passed the business on to four employees, one of whom, António Xavier da Silva, took over the barbershop in 1970, alone, until the present day.
The originality of the establishment, with its metal counter and pink and black marble wainscoting, attracts attention. It's an old-fashioned barbershop, using a razor and brush to spread the shaving cream, but there are also modern hair clippers.
