Considered the oldest café in Braga, Café Vianna is one of the city's emblematic spaces and tourist attractions. A meeting place for lively gatherings, it has marked several generations and there isn't a Braga resident who hasn't sat on its terrace, right next to the fountain, on a summer's evening. But if the tertulian experiences captivate, its architecture and the refinement of its decoration, with its stucco, gilded friezes, generous mirrors, marble and furniture, continue to fascinate those who visit this space, just as it did in 1875, when "there were only two main cafés, in Campo Sant'Ana, and in the gallery they call Debaixo da Arcada, the most luxurious is Café Vianna, adorned with magnificent mirrors and comfortable and airy divans (...) and magnificent billiards.) and magnificent billiards."

History
Café Vianna was founded in 1858 by Manuel José da Cunha Vianna. Local newspapers dating from 1858 mention the importance of the Vianna for the city of Braga, and tell how artists, politicians and writers such as Eça de Queirós and Camilo Castelo Branco were regulars there. From their seats at the Vianna, they observed society, which they later reflected on in their artistic expressions. The famous, now defunct, games room often hosted political meetings, some of them decisive for the country's history, such as the famous Movement of May 28, 1926, led by General Gomes da Costa. The Movement started at the Café Vianna and led to the end of the First Portuguese Republic. Years earlier, in 1921, an unusual shortage of metals for the manufacture of coins led Café Vianna to produce banknotes that were used throughout the city as an official substitute for cash. The space retains its original decoration and furnishings, with an imposing interior with carved ceilings, marble tables, sumptuous sofas and monumental mirrors. This continues to be a place of reference for generations of Bracarenses around the world.
Ah... if only Vianna's walls could talk!
