The store
Located "just behind the town hall", the Seed House occupies a blue and white tiled building, with a display of plants, fruit and vegetable plants on the doorstep.
History
Founded in 1919 by Rodrigo da Costa Gomes, Casa das Sementes was originally dedicated to selling flours, cereals, vegetables and seeds. From this small store in Rua D Frei Caetano Brandão, the items were distributed to customers with a handcart, using the streetcar tracks to facilitate transportation. Over the next three decades, the business prospered and Rodrigo da Costa Gomes introduced chemical fertilizers, animal feed, seed potatoes and pesticides. In 1947, he set up a limited company with José de Oliveira, a dedicated employee of the company, and his son, Fernando de Oliveira Gomes. In 1985, the company moved to new premises, but the small store where it all began remains to this day, dedicated to the retail sale of ornamental plants, vegetables, fruit trees, seeds, animal feed, fertilizers, substrates and tools.
Since 2002, due to the death of two of the partners, the company Provilojas, Lda. has been made up of Fernando Oliveira Gomes, José Oliveira Fernandes and António de Oliveira Caldas who, in keeping with a long-standing tradition, daily witness the ritual of setting up and dismantling this orchard/garden on the sidewalk. Those who enter are confronted with the strong smells of fertilizer and feed, but when you cross the magnificent stone arches, you enter the world of the subtle aromas of ornamental plants.
