See more +The convent of São Francisco is a building attached to the Church of São Jerónimo and the Chapel of São Frutuoso, the latter of which has been classified as a National Monument since 1944. Although physically connected, because they were originally part of the same monastic complex, they were used differently after the extinction of the religious orders in Portugal in 1883-84 and the consequent integration of their assets into the National Treasury.
The Church of São Jerónimo was put to parish use, while the convent annexes were sold to private individuals, who converted them into a farm.
In the 1930s and 1940s, the chapel of São Frutuoso was rediscovered and underwent major restoration work, and has since been visited as a monument of architectural interest.
