The Domus da Escola Velha da Sé preserves traces of a Roman dwelling in the Italic tradition.
See more +The Fonte do Ídolo is a cave sanctuary of pre-Roman origin, located in the current historic center of Braga. This monument stands out for its combination of natural elements such as stone and water, probably associated with the cult of fertility, abundance and community protection.
Monumentalized in Roman times, the sanctuary displays two figures sculpted in relief and inscriptions in Latin that identify the deities venerated: Nabia, traditionally associated with water and fertility, and Tongoenabiago, possibly a local deity or the wall of Nabia. These representations would have been part of a classically-inspired architectural structure, reflecting the integration of indigenous cults into the Roman symbolic universe.
Interpreted as a sacred place prior to the foundation of Bracara Augusta, the Idol Fountain bears witness to the ritual and political importance of Braga's hill during the Iron Age.
The interpretation of the monument is complemented by an interactive video, which helps to contextualize the symbolic, historical and archaeological significance of this sanctuary.
