Neoclassical in style, it is one of the most important religious destinations in the city and the second largest center of devotion to the Virgin Mary in Portugal.
Its history began in 1863 at the hands of the priest from Braga, Martinho António Pereira da Silva, the city's vicar, who wanted to materialize his great devotion to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception through a pedestal where a statue would be placed, right on top of the hill.
In neoclassical style, the monumental sanctuary is built in the shape of a Latin cross, with a zimborium and two towers housing the carillon of bells. It has a crypt in the basement, built in the 1970s because of the need to increase the space due to the growing number of pilgrims.
Inside the shrine, you can see the 1.32-meter chiseled silver tabernacle, the statue of Our Lady with a 2.5 kilogram crown in solid gold, the main altar and the altar of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
This temple is surrounded by a wooded park, gardens, a cross, fountains and a chapel of ex-votos, and is also one of the greatest highlights in terms of sacred art in the city of Braga.
