The Church of São João do Souto is a historic landmark of great importance to Braga. Its origins date back to the 12th century, when the primitive church was built and later donated in 1161 to Archbishop João Peculiar by Pedro Aurives and Gelvira Midiz. One of philosophy's most illustrious figures, Francisco Sanches, was baptized in this sacred space. The current building, erected at the end of the 18th century by Archbishop Gaspar de Bragança, maintains an intimate connection with the Coimbras Chapel, preserving the spiritual and architectural legacy of the region.

Consecrated to Saint John the Baptist, this church is the cradle of Braga's emblematic Saint John's Festivities, celebrations that continue to fill the city with life, color and tradition, paying homage to one of its deepest cultural roots.
