See more +The Carmo Convent was originally founded in 1635 in Largo das Carvalheiras, in the parish of Sé, by Friar José do Espírito Santo. In 1654, construction began on the current building in the parish of São Vicente, where the community moved in 1655. With the extinction of the religious orders in Portugal in 1834, the convent ceased to function as such and its facilities were used as a Military Hospital. The building was later sold to private individuals and became home to Dublin College.
At the end of the 19th century, the façade of the old church was in a bad state and threatened to collapse in 1906. For this reason, in 1907 a project was drawn up to replace the façade by the architect Moura Coutinho, and the work was completed in 1911, restoring the building to its former grandeur.
