Also known as Falperra, this tree-lined area recalls the times when this place was nicknamed a "robbers' village" due to its isolation, and where the old Roman road ran between Braga and Guimarães.
The tributes to Santa Marta are ancient and, even today, many of the faithful go there out of devotion. The pilgrimage to Santa Marta, in mid-July, is one of the most famous, passing by the Chapel of Santa Marta das Cortiças and the Chapel of Santa Marta do Leão (the latter already located in the neighboring municipality of Guimarães). The latter is so named thanks to an ancient fountain with an opulent granite sculpture of a lion.
The Chapel of Santa Marta das Cortiças, located on Monte das Cortiças, also welcomes pilgrims in mid-July and, in addition to the Chapel, you can find the monument of Our Lady of the Assumption, the ruins of a Paleochristian basilica and a possible Suevi palace in the vicinity. It also houses the ruins of an Iron Age Castro settlement.
